BACKGROUND
Peter YoungPeter YoungPeter Young

Peter Young came to filmmaking the long way, spending the first ten years of his working life mustering, shearing, fishing and fencing.

Over this time Peter developed a strong connection to the land and the people that work on it and this bond remained even with his shift to the film and television industry which began at the age of 28 as a trainee director at TVNZ's Natural History Unit in Dunedin.

Several years later he moved to Taylormade Productions and then after being drawn to camera work left directing and began a four year stint as a news and current affairs cameraman at TV3. During this period he moved to Christchurch where he eventually established his own company, Fisheye Films, in 1997.

Since then he has been shooting for numerous companies in New Zealand and around the world, and has worked on well over a hundred documentaries — art, wildlife, human interest and historical. He has also shot numerous commercials, music videos and dramas.

More recently he returned to directing and has produced and shot a number of successful television programmes, including three series of the popular adventure/travel/food show Hunger for the Wild (winner Best Factual Series at the 2007 New Zealand Screen Awards and Best Lifestyle and Entertainment at the 2009 Qantas Awards. His latest series Coasters, explores the connection Kiwi's have with their coast and he is currently in production with Get Fresh, a foray into locally sourced culinary delights.

Peter is currently in production with a feature documentary on The Ross Sea in Antarctica, which has led to the establishment of the The Last Ocean charitable trust.

"As a cameraman you generally don't see your pictures until they get to the screen and when you do, it's a real thrill to see them crafted into a wonderful piece of film or television. The contribution of sound, music, narration, performance and story creates something far richer than individual components — and that's the magic of this industry."
